Rail and Track Infrastructure

The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway has 150 miles of quality rail infrastructure. We have 141 lb. continuous welded rail on many sections of our railroad, which means dependability and safe handling for our customers. We have spent over $30 Million in the last decade to improve our corridor. Because of these upgrades, our rail infrastructure can handle 90 car unit trains at 286,000 pounds per car. This is the kind of infrastructure you'll find on the class I railroads.

Interchange Infrastructure

Interchange infrastructure determines the capacity that a railroad can send/receive freight from other railroads. Having long sidings at the interchange allows our railroad to handle the longest trains. For our customers handling 90 car unit trains spanning over a mile long, this capacity is essential. Small interchanges amount to stoppages and congestion on the main line, making it less timely in getting customers their freight. Read more about our interchanges below.

Locomotive Fleet

The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway has 20 fully operable locomotives that are used for rail freight transportation. In addition, we have run through power agreements to use locomotives from either CSX or NS when handling unit trains for larger customers. We use our locomotives to provide switching services at industrial facilities along our railroad. For customers who do their own switching, we can lease them a locomotive, providing routine maintenance and repair.

Maintenance Equipment and Other Heavy Machinery

We have heavy machinery to deal with all the day to day maintenance and upgrades. From installing ties and rail to tamping and regulating the ballast, we have the equipment to keep our track profile looking like the big railroads. We maintain all track, bridges, and sidings. We give customers the option of using us to maintain their sidings.

Passenger Cars and Business Cars

The Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway has passenger cars and business cars for holding economic development events, political fundraisers, social functions, etc. While we are a freight railroad, we hope to be able to use these assets to promote new business on our railroad. We are in the process of fixing up and restoring vintage railcars such as the Airslie SP100. Our mechanical crew has done a great job.
